| In a surprise move, German metalworkers' trade union IG Metall Frankfurt demands an extended deadline to secure Dräger Medical site in Lübeck / 96.4 percent of those Dräger Medical IG Metall members surveyed approve package of measures |
| Lübeck, 12 January 2005 – As announced by Drägerwerk AG, Lübeck, the Main Board of the Frankfurt IG Metall trade union has requested the Dräger Executive Board, two days before expiry of the agreed deadline on 13 January 2005, to agree to a one-week extension of the deadline for its decision on the negotiated package of measures. If Dräger fails to comply with this request, the collective agreement reached in Lübeck on 14 December will be rejected. |
| Ingo Gensch, Human Resources Director at Drägerwerk AG, finds this sudden demand by the IG Metall extremely hard to understand, especially in view of the fact that both the company's collective bargaining committee and the trade union's Collective Bargaining Commission Küste [Sea Coast] had already looked into and reached agreement on the matter before Christmas. What is more, the outcome of the negotiations and its consequences had been announced in detail by the IG Metall and published in the press. As Ingo Gensch continued, it is hardly imaginable that this should have happened without the consent of the IG Metall Frankfurt. It is also hard to see why the IG Metall Frankfurt – given that deadline problems were likely – did not react earlier to the agreed declaration deadline. |
| The survey of those IG Metall members employed by Dräger Medical, which was completed on 11 January 2005, revealed widespread agreement with the package of measures: 96.4% of those questioned approved the agreements. |
| In order not to put the successful outcome of the negotiations at stake, and in the interests of the staff, the Dräger Medical company, the city of Lübeck and the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the Dräger Executive Board has now declared that it is willing to grant an extension of the deadline to 6 p.m. on 19 January 2005. |
| At the same time, however, any change to the contents of the agreement reached in December with the negotiation committee of the IG Metall will be rejected. "We would like to stress once again“, says Ingo Gensch, "that, if the agreement is rejected or the IG Metall requests a new round of additional negotiations, we will take immediate action in pursuing the contingency plan we designed for such a case.“ |
